Radical PhD

CLIENT

Radical PhD is a website that gives PhD students access to coaching and resources to assist with dissertation completion. They put additional focus on the needs of POC-I and LGBTQ students.

Radical PhD offers dissertation coaching that is personalized dissertation coaching. They focus on people of color, LGBTQ and other people historically underrepresented in higher education. Radical PhD offers some tools to help organize plans of action for dissertations. They want to attract more people to their site, get more students engaged in coaching and provide services that the students want and need.

MY TEAM

Together we conducted a Kano Analysis. We independently created rapid prototypes and selected rapid prototypes to independently make high fidelity wireframes which we then annotated.

Getting Started

We completed a competitive audit between Radical PhD and other educational coaching sites. We found that most other services provided their cost upfront. Having forums was extremely popular as was having articles. Following our audit, we had a web call with Dr. Aida, the brain behind Radical PhD. We learned about her goals of wanting to meet students where they were, giving them a feeling of self control and preventing isolation by building community. 

We created accounts on Radical PhD and built initial user journey maps on the current version of the website.

Early Prototypes

Early wireframes were created. Some were updates on the current site whilst others were completely new ideas. We selected 12 wireframes for a Kano analysis. Here were the wireframes I created included:

  • Informational postcards to hand out on campuses

  • A page that gives cost estimation.

  • An updated homepage with a more hearty description and updated navigation

  • A fun quiz to do some self-reflection.

  • Post-graduation check-in e-mails.

Post-Analysis

The Kano analysis favored an updated homepage, a cost page, quizzes, videos, and a writer's block tool.

There was also a budget announced of 200 development hours when we met with the development team and they gave us their time predictions on building out our wireframes onto the current website.
